Study habits of 8thstandard students of
K.P.M.H.S.S , Poothotta
INTRODUCTION
Habits are the very garments of the soul personality is
clothed in habits . Character is described as bundle of habits . Habits are
considered as the very foundation of the social order and moral discipline .
Habit , according to James “ Is the enormous flywheel of society” . Good moral
character is a matter of habitual behavior.
Study habits are
developed in an atmosphere that is conducive to learn by co-orperative and
consistent efforts on the part of learner’s , teacher’s , parents and others .
The inculcation of study habits is beneficial as the learner will know how to
meet and solve his problem and is able to complete his assignment effectively
and successfully. Development of study habits consists of a constant allocation
to the work at hand . study habits are established gradually over a period of
time . The learner would have a greater change to achieve in his studies if he
develops study habit .
Mathematics is a
subject whose basic knowledge is quite essential for each and every individuals
of the world . So providing mathematical knowledge to the people is very much
needed . It has already been observed that students score less in mathematics
and less are selected for science stream then that of humanities . The reason
could be improper study habits and negative attitude towards mathematics . To
know the achievement in mathematics , the researcher has to pay attention to
the study habits of students . Here the researcher had identified the problem
to Know the study habits and performance of the students in mathematics at
secondary level .
Study habits of 9th standard students of
K.P.M.H.S.S , Poothotta
I had conducted a study on learning habits among the
students n 9 I of K.P.M.H.S.S , Poothotta . First the students were observed
kindly in order to identify the actual position of students and those with
learning habits , I conducted an achievement test for the students of 9I .
Among the 36 students by analysing the results . I had found that among 36
students 6 students have scored low mark . From this I had found that the
students have some learning problems . I had conducted a serious of observation
and interview from that it was understood that the most prominent problem for
their poor academic performance was due to study habits .
In
order to confirm the observation I had conducted a post test on study habit for
this purpose . I had used palsane and Sharma study habits inventory by M.N .
Palsane and sadhana sharma .
The
study habit inventory is an instrument designed to measure study habits which
include budgeting time , physical conditions for study , reading , ability ,
note taking , factors in learning motivation , memory , taking examination .
Which includes preparation for examinations and use of examination results and
health . It has forty five items . The PSSHI is a 3point scale with response always
or mostly , sometimes and rarely or never . The scale consist of 11 negative
and 30 for positive items . Each item carries weight of 2,1 and 0 respectively
. And the score is reversed for negative items . The study habits is mesured on
the basis of total scores obtained by the subjects .
From study habit inventory I had found that 5 students have greater
problem in study habits . I took extra time to provide remedial measures . I had tought them how to manage time . I
asked them to buy a separate note to do maths home work s by which I asked to
do.
In order to analyse the success of strategy to analyse . I had conducted
a post test . The complicity of question paper was ensured.
From the data I had found that the 5 students have improvement .
CONCLUSION
Learning is an act
of acquiring new or modified an reinforcing existing knowledge , behavior ,
skills , values or preference which may lead to a potential change in synthesising
information , depth of knowledge , attitude or behavior relative to the type
and range of experience .
Learning skills on habits are a factor
that effects the learning process of the students . The students of 9I at
K.P.M.H.S.S , Poothotta lacked proper study habits like memory skill ,time
management etc . Which resulted in the attainment of low marks . Once after providing proper guidance and
instructions the students were able to achieve good marks for the exam .
SUGGESTIONS
1. Subject
matter of all subjects should be taught and learnt in close contact with it’s
applications
2. Students
should be encouraged to develop proper generalisation
3. Discussion
and debates should be arranged to develop the students power of understanding
relationships.
4. Students
should be guided to discover common essential features and relationships of
situations which appear to be different suprerfically .
5. Goals
, out puts and objects of a particular activities should be made very clear to
the students .
